Retention · 14 Jul 2026 · 6 min read
Retention is decided in the first ninety seconds. Almost always by onboarding, almost never by the feature you are about to build.
Every founder we meet with a retention problem believes it is a feature problem. It almost never is. The users who churn did not evaluate your features — they never reached them.
Measure time-to-value, not sign-ups
Pick the single moment where your app becomes useful — the first booking, the first saved item, the first message sent. Now measure how many seconds pass between install and that moment. If it is over two minutes, that is your churn, not your feature set.
